God’s Remedy for Troubling Times

We are in troubling times; politically, economically, shut-downs, quarantines, pandemics, and day to day stressors. It is easy to get caught up and live in anxiety and fear. That is not God’s will or desire for his children to live in fear. Fear is from the enemy. His plan is only to steal, kill and destroy. God gives us his remedy through His word. Let’s take a look at Phil 4:6-8

“Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God.

We are told not to fret or worry but through and prayer and thanksgiving. Why thanksgiving?

  • Thanksgiving is thinking about God’s faithfulness
  • Thanksgiving is a practical way to express faith
  • Thanksgiving helps us to focus on Him and not on the circumstances
  • Thanksgiving and Praise work hand in hand. God inhabits our praises not our fear.

And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding, shall garrison and  mount guard over your hearts and mind in Christ Jesus.

  • Peace is the Holy Spirit. Jesus is called the Prince of Peace.
  • Peace is the tranquil state of a soul assured of salvation through Christ
  • This peace counters fear
  • This peace helps us to be content
  • Peace is part of our inheritance as believers

If we stop the worry and fear, the Holy Spirit will be a guard over our heart and minds in Christ Jesus.

For the rest, brethren, , whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things. [fix your mind on them].

The key word here is THNK

  • Our thoughts are the starting point and everything else will follow. If we start thinking anxious and worrisome thoughts it will lead to anxiety, discouragement, and depression. It influences actions, attitudes, and behaviors.
  • Rom. 12:1 tells us to renew our minds so we will know God’s good and perfect will. Fear, fretting, anxiety is not God’s perfect will.
  • Think means we get to choose what we set our mind on. Deut. 30:19 tells us to choose life or death, blessings or cursings.
  • When you start to fret or worry, think on Jesus. His faithfulness, love, grace, salvation, redemption.
